Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise when she was just a young girl. Her aunt was a nurse who stayed overnight in order to give her the opportunity to study art theatre or literature. DuVernay became enamored with the 1961 film West Side Story after her aunt introduced the film to DuVernay. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that art can be used to promote activism. DuVernay was taught to be socially conscious from her mother. Even though DuVernay lived in Compton with her family she spent every summer living in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historical Civil Rights march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent town of Selma Alabama. The time she spent in Selma Alabama was later the inspiration to write a script for a film based on The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was awarded her high school diploma from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she earned qualifications in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay was a student at the college when she became interested in production for television journalism. She worked as a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to check the trash inside the house that belonged to a member of the jury. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied in journalism, so she made the decision to go into the publicity industry. DuVernay started her career as a junior public relations assistant at a small film studio following her graduation from the college. The year 1999 was the time she launched her own company that specialized in public relations, The DuVernay Agency. Apart from PR, the agency also created a variety of social media and lifestyle networks, including Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
